1942年生。原名张鹏川，笔名野舟、兰长翎。江苏常州人。1960：地方 美术学院附中毕业。1965：地方 工艺美术学院装璜 美术系壁画专业毕业。1965-2000：甘肃省博物馆（研讨 员，副馆长，国家文物局1 级文物鉴定专家）。2000—今：苏州大学（校博物馆馆长、艺术学院博士生导师、美术考古与设计艺术史方向）。
1960地方 美术学院附中毕业、1965地方 工艺美术学院装璜 美术系壁画专业毕业、1965甘肃省博物馆、1969—1978参加武威雷台汉墓、嘉峪关魏晋壁画墓、嘉峪关黑山古代岩画、酒泉丁家闸十六国壁画墓、景泰张家台新石器时代遗址、兰州花寨子新石器时代遗址、玉门火烧沟青铜文明 遗址的考古发掘或考察工作、1978—1982掌管 秦安大地湾新石器时代遗址发掘工作、1983—1984参加肃北祁连山古代岩画、武威5 坝山汉代壁画墓考古工作。
历任甘肃省博物馆副馆长，研讨 员。中国美术家协会会员，甘肃省美术家协会理事，中国汉画学会理事，甘肃省收藏学会副理事长。曾参加武威、嘉峪关、酒泉等地汉晋十六国壁画墓的美术考古工作，参加嘉峪关、泾原等地古代少数民族岩画的考察工作，参加兰州、景泰、广河、玉门等地远古文明 遗址的田野考古工作；掌管 秦安大地湾、王家阴洼等遗址的田野考古工作。1996年被国家文物局任命为东南 地区馆藏1 级文物鉴定组专家。
自2000年起，任苏州大学艺术学院教授、博士生导师、设计艺术研讨 所所长。中国工艺美术学会理论委员会常务理事。2009年任苏州大学博物馆馆长。
