自1960年年9月为南京师范学院美术系（今南京师大美术学院）首任书法教师起，至今不断 从事高等书法教育工作。该校从1960年在全国高校中率先开设书法课程，1983年创办全国高等 师范院校书行书毛泽东词1 首
法教师进修班，1985年在全国首建四年制书法专业及1999年成立书法系，其间他起到了创建和掌管 教学的作用。他于1986年4月晋升为我国第一名 书法教授。2013年获得第四届中国书法兰亭奖毕生 成就奖。
同年，任日本文部省特聘书法教授，时为国立爱知教育大学首席书法教授。现任南京师范大学资深教授、中国书法家协会顾问、江苏省书法家协会主席。
他曾任美术系系主任、江苏省人民代表大会第5 、六、七、八次代表，第七、八届常委兼教科文委员会委员。他曾多次出席由我国大陆及香港地区、日本、韩国有关方面主办的国际性书法学术会议及文明 论坛。诸如，1986年在日本中部日本书道会及中日旧事 社联合主办的“书法学术交流大会”上讲演《当代中国书法发展的趋向》；1987年作为中日著名书法家代表之1 ，出席“中日书法讨论会暨兰亭笔会”；1997年在香港中文大学主办的“中国书法国际学术会议”上演讲《书法教学散论》；2002年作为文物出版社、南京博物院、南京市博物馆、江苏省书法家协会联合主办的“第5 届中国书法史论暨六朝书法国际研讨会”掌管 人之1 ，发表学术性的致词；2003年在北京师范大学主办的“启功书法学国际研讨会”上演讲《启功书法试论》；2004年在中华民族文明 促进会主办的“2004文明 高举论坛”上演讲《中国书法的民族性及国际交流》

著作有1965年出版并发行于我国大陆和港、澳、台地区，日本、韩国、新加坡、法国（法文版）的《书法基础知识》等；主编有《于右任书法精品集》、《江苏古代书法研讨 丛书》（三卷），和 作为第1 主编的《中国书法全集·第86卷》等。书法创作成果有《尉天池书法全集 》；应日本方面约请 ，在名古屋举办的《尉天池名墨展》；有书法作品入选历届全国书法篆刻展；多次应邀为国际性书法展提供作品。他在从事高等书法教育的同时，长时间 坚持投入群众性的书法活动。在我国掀起书法热潮之前的六十至七十年代末，他奔波于江苏、安徽、浙江、山东、河南、北京、湖南等省市，作了数十次书法讲座。八十年代初江苏省书法家协会、中国书法家协会相继成立后，他更是为书法事业不断付出心力。

Works are published in 1965 and released in mainland China and Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Singapore, France (French version) the "basic knowledge" of calligraphy; editor of "Yu Youren", "Jiangsu calligraphy collection of Ancient Calligraphy Series" (three volumes), as well as the first editor "China eighty-sixth volume" and other works of calligraphy. The calligraphy creation achievement "Weitianchi calligraphy anthology"; the Japanese side should be invited, held in Nagoya "Weitianchi Mexican Exhibition"; calligraphy works selected for the national calligraphy exhibition; invited to provide work for the international calligraphy exhibition.
