黄乃源，1931年11月1日生于江西省萍乡市。1949年东南 艺术学院（西安美院前身）毕业，留校执教40年，其中1953年--1972年在美院附中任素描、色彩课教学，并长时间 担任班主任工作；1972年--1993年在美院油画系任素描、色彩、创作课教学，曾任油画系教研室主任；1982年--1993年授予硕士研讨 生导师，指点 教学。离休后曾在美院高研班讲评素描作品，进行人物油画教学。他在教学中坚持研讨 和实践结合的教学方式，画了大量的素描、油画教学示范作品，并编写了大量素描、油画教学材料 。曾参加《全国高等艺术院校素描教学座谈会》、《全国高等艺术院校创作教学座谈会》等学术研讨会，并发表论文《论素描教学》。
作品1950年至1966年从事年画、宣扬 画、版画创作。在东南 艺术学院学习时期，结合当时宣扬 工作的需求 ，参加了东南 公安展览、"八1 "建军展览、东南 经建展览、东南 "三反"展览等十余处博览会 的创作工作，为了经常突击宣扬 工作的需求 ，美术系组织了1 个"美术创作组"，成为创作组的成员，在群众日报和东南 画报发表多套连环画、宣扬 画和版画作品，其代表作品有《蒙族人民欢迎解放军》、《1 年比1 年更好》、《我娃上学》、《书摊》、《巡道工》、《乡村病院 》、《夏收》、《补缀 农具预备 春耕》、《知心话》等，参加全国美术作品大展并发表，版画作品《巡道工》被中国美术馆收藏，北京人民美术出版社出版单幅画。
1969年至1976年借调在陕西省美术创作组。创作毛主席在陕北十三年为题材的中国革命历史油画作品。创作油画《地方 红军到陕北》被延安纪念馆陈列收藏；和他人合作创作的画有《陕北人民迎救星》被北京中国人民革命军事博物馆陈列收藏；《亲切的教导》、《拜年》、《我们的斗争需求 马列主义》、《你办事我放心》、《华主席翻身农奴热爱您》等作品参加全国大展，并由多家美术出版社出版单幅画，数十种报刊杂志发表。
1977年至2004年，数十次深入黄河流域、秦汉长城、丝绸古道、苍茫草原、天山南北、黄土高原、江南水乡、十里渔村等地画了数百幅油画写生，收集大量创作素材，创作1 批有中国西部特色的风情民俗画、风光油画风景和肖像画作品。这1 时期，还从事壁画艺术创作，为西安火车站设计创作大型壁画《延安金秋》（合作）、《雁塔晨钟》，为唐代艺术博物馆设计创作大型铜板腐蚀壁画《唐节日风俗图》（合作）、《唐歌舞》。作品在国内和东南亚、日本、欧美等国家参展，在香港、新加坡举办个人画展，其中《藏族女教师》、《斯诺在陕北》、《脚印》、《阳光下》、《高原十月》等作品获奖。作品被博物馆、美术观和收藏家收藏。中国美术观收藏油画写生《巨轮》、《萍乡洗煤厂》；英国剑桥大学图书馆收藏《吕先生夫妇肖像》油画；新加坡陈嘉庚基金会收藏中国西部民俗画5幅；新加坡龙语文艺中心收藏西部风景油画、肖像等十余幅；新加坡企业家陶先生收藏《脚印》等多幅油画；日本仲村哲先生收藏油画写生作品7幅。作品在十余个美术出版社出版，《画廊》、《美术》、《素描艺术》等专业刊物发表，出版画册有《黄乃源油画风景习作选》、《黄乃源油画作品选》、《黄乃源油画风景写生集》、《黄乃源油画作品集》。
病逝2004年7月22日因病不幸逝世。
