出生于浙江泰顺。1946年加入中国共产党，参加党的地下工作。因酷爱艺术，中学毕业后(1947年)考入杭州国立艺术专科学校（中国美术学院前身）。先学中国画，后专攻油画，前后 得到潘天寿、黄宾虹、林风眠、吴大羽、倪贻德等名家名师的教育与指点 。1952年毕业后在上海、北京两地美术出版社任职。1958年因错划为“左派 ”，被下放到东南 高原青海省达17年之久，身心深受摧残。1975年因病自青海人民出版社提前退休回到浙江家乡。1984年定居无锡，1999年秋去世。林先生中国画与油画并修，油画则人物、风景兼擅。其主题性创作作品多次入选全国及省市美展并获奖。前后 在青海西宁、江苏无锡等地举办个人画展。回顾终身 绘画与实践，盲目 后期油画风景为其艺术之代表。生前因故未能如愿出版作品集。得到应有的好评与公论。
