肖像画家和历史画家。亦名沈加蔚、嘉蔚。1948年生于上海。文革中自学绘画。1970年到北大荒当农工并参加兵团美术班专业 创作。油画《为我们伟大祖国站岗（1974）具有全国影响，成为文革标志性美术作品。1998年和2008年应邀在纽约和毕尔巴鄂的古根海姆博物馆与纽约的亚洲协会博物馆。1982至1984年在北京地方 美术学院进修结业。5 次获全国美展奖。1989年移居澳大利亚悉尼。1998年获玛丽麦格洛普奖。十1 次入围阿基鲍尔奖。2006年获舍尔曼奖。作品由中国国家博物馆、中国美术馆、澳大利亚国家肖像馆、澳大利亚国会大厦等公立机构与私人收藏。编辑出版大型图文合集《刘宇廉》（2005）和三卷本历史照片图册《莫理循眼里的近代中国》（2006）。
2010年将1995年创作的《苗子郁风象》与黄苗子、郁风二老共同捐赠给中国美术馆；
2009年他受托与王旭王兰合作绘制了大型马来西亚历史画《默德卡(独立)》，在悉尼大学与马来西亚首都吉隆坡双子塔展出时广受好评；
2007年在历史画领域的开掘获得澳大利亚艺术界的赞美 ，他的大型历史画《辛丑条约II》在该年荣获澳洲最重要的主题画大奖――舍尔曼奖，为母校嘉兴实验小学（原建设中心小学）创作并捐赠了该校创办人（秋瑾烈士好友）的肖像；
2006年参加第二届北京国际艺术双年展，展出的《辛丑条约I》由中国美术馆收藏。参与策划了2005年在中国美术馆展出的《刘宇廉回顾展》，并主编出版了《刘宇廉》大型画文合集。出任编撰，出版了大型三卷本历史照片图集，《莫理循眼里的近代中国》，此书在悉尼与北京分别举办的发行式上，得到中华人民共和国驻悉尼总领馆文明 参赞与澳大利亚联邦驻中国大使的高度赞美 ，在中澳文明 界备获好评。还利用本身 的作品换取私人帮助 ，安排中国地方 电视台摄制组来澳大利亚拍摄莫理循专题片。
澳洲全国性英文大报<澳大利亚人>将他评为最杰出的十位澳大利亚华人之1 ，并列名第1 ；
2006年参与曼德拉儿童基金会组织的活动，在南非前总统曼德拉创作的六幅素描无限 印刷版画上再创作，画上了曼德拉的肖像，这套作品在达沃斯国际论坛上广受欢迎，其拍卖所得全部捐赠给曼德拉基金会，难堪 童造福；
2005年参加第1 届北京国际艺术双年展。应邀回国为故乡嘉兴市博物馆创作大型历史画《欈李之战》；

1995年1月沈抵澳大利亚悉尼学习英语，后定居于悉尼南郊的邦定纳艺术村。初到澳洲时身无分文。沈在悉尼达令港为游客画肖像三年。与大部分同行不同的是，沈没有把画头像视作谋生手段，而是视为1 种写生与研讨 机会。从而为其成为专业肖像画家打下了扎实的基础。其间写生头像数千幅，画遍全球各人种，各国籍的男女老幼；
